Dunk-a-roo!

"Why does my bird dump food/toys in their water dish?" This is a common complaint and question we hear in the store. While there are many funny answers such as “making soup”, “he’s telling me he didn’t like his meal”, or “world’s sloppiest eater”, the reality is thought to be based on physiology. Not having teeth, much of what they swallow goes down in the same size and shape as it was bit off. Birds also have minimal moisture in their mouths and esophaguses. So these things being the case, the thought is that once the food has soaked, fibers are easier to bite through, hard pieces are not so scratchy and the food ultimately becomes easier to digest. While the mess is gross and it's inconvenient to change their water at what seems like every 5 minutes for some birds, rest assured it is a natural, normal behavior!
