One of my favorite ways to add enrichment into my bird’s life is by adding things I’ve foraged from my yard or grown myself. One of the easiest things I’ve found is simply going and collecting edible flowers to add on top of her food! Adding edible flowers does sound intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be!
You can do something complex like growing a lot of flowers to harvest and dry out, like we tried this year with our globe amaranth or if you have an herb garden, you can use their fresh blossoms as well. It can also be as simple as gathering them from untreated areas outside. Some of my favorite ones are just from my (untreated) backyard, like dandelions and purple violets. I found all of these just by taking a quick look around the property! You can add them fresh on top of their food, or let the flowers dry out and add it into their dry mix of food. If they are edible for humans, they are safe for birds as well, so get creative! We also have several blends of dried flowers here in store if you aren’t an outside forager. Here is a small list of some of the flowers that would be great to introduce to your birds: dandelion, viola, nasturtium, borage, pansy, camomile, rose, lilac, marigold, hibiscus, and for the ones I missed check out the amazing chart done by China Prairie below!
