Foraging Frenzy!

What's recycling got to do with birds you may ask? Well, lots of items have a second use as bird toys or for foraging bowls.

-Old, clean toy parts from the bottom of the cage

There is nothing worse than a wood piece broken into two giant hunks that won't be chewed again. I use pieces like this to add over food and make my birds dig for their meals. You can deconstruct any toy and salvage different pieces as long as they're clean or can be cleaned.

-Boxes!

Pasta boxes with the plastic side and glue ripped off are perfect chew toys. Toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls are great foraging tubes for larger birds. Smaller guys can get their heads stuck, so cutting the rolls up into pieces is best for them.

-Bottles and bottle caps

Cleaned plastic bottles with the labels ripped off are great fun for some birds. Bottle caps, after they've been soaked in 10% bleach solution, make great items to place over food in bowls, to be tossed about, drilled holes and strung up to hide treats in and more!

-Pill bottles

CLEAN pill bottles with the label taken off make great foraging opportunities for larger birds while adding safe bird appropriate sized material to make a rattle. To take the label off, put the pill bottle in the freezer for a bit, then peel it off, it’s much easier that way. Large wooden beads work for big birds, flipping the lid inside out makes it a screw cap they can then undo and get the items inside. Smaller birds can use it as a rattle if you add pony beads from used toys.
