Safety First!

Let’s be honest. Birds are RIDICULOUSLY good at getting themselves into dangerous situations (some of mine, I feel like they go out of their way to come up with new ways to nearly give me a heart attack). It is so important to always be vigilant and watch what your birds are getting into.

A scary example of this just happened to one of our employees, whose bird had an accident with a toy. The toy was initially safe and appropriate for that size bird, but over time and as her bird chewed on it, she opened up the empty space inside of the cardboard birdie bagel. In her excitement to shred the bagel, she managed to get her head caught between the bagel and the cord. Luckily, her owner was nearby and was able to help her immediately.

Toys that were once perfectly safe may not always remain so, depending on how your bird shreds them. Always keep an eye on how the toy progresses and make sure there’s no danger to your bird.

Some things to watch for:

-Long strands of string (that once held toy parts) that the bird can now get wrapped around and tangled in

-Loops that are wide enough for your bird to get their head or body stuck in (the cardboard bagel pictured, looped cord, etc.)

-Loose fibers from shredded toy parts that toenails could get stuck in and torn out

-Open chain or links that could get hooked through the beak

Birds are danger magnets, and it’s so important to do everything we can to minimize those dangers!
