Did you know that we are still discovering new species of parrots ? One of the most recent is a species of Amazon parrot! The previously undescribed “Blue-winged Amazon”, is possibly the only easily sexually dimorphic (males and females look different) species in the Amazon family.
Other species can only be identified visually by an expert or must be DNA sexed. They were first described and recognized as of 2017, thanks to Miguel A. Gómez Garza, a wildlife veterinarian who wrote about the species in a book he published in 2014. Sadly, there are probably no more than 100 wild individuals left in their native habitat in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico.
